Retreats

Since the time of the Buddha, intensive retreat practice has been considered crucial for the maturing of insight. The simplicity and support of the retreat environment encourage a continuity of awareness. Retreats can help develop qualities such as confidence, perseverance, mindfulness, concentration and the unfolding of wisdom and compassion.

Retreats are held in silence and meals are provided. All retreats include instruction, interviews and/or discussion in addition to meditation practice. There is also a short period of mindful work.

Registrations must be received by noon on Thursday before the retreat. It is possible to register for one day of a two-day retreat. If you are new to retreats at CIMC, it is possible to register for just the first day of a two-day retreat but not just the second day. Please call the office for more information.

CIMC is unable to provide housing. We can suggest places to stay that are within walking and driving distance of the Center.

Useful Information for Retreats

Before You Arrive
  • Remember to pre-register before noon on the Thursday preceding the retreat. If your registration is received after noon on Thursday, you will need to make alternate meal plans. Please do not assume there will be space available at the last minute.
  • Please help protect retreatants with chemical sensitivies by avoiding scented products such as lotions, perfumes, after-shave, and hair products when getting ready to come to the workshop.
  • Comfortable clothing is recommended. Because the temperature of the hall can vary throughout the day, dressing in layers is also a good idea.
  • There is no need to bring your own cushion. Zafus (round cushions), meditation benches, zabutons (large mats), and chairs are available at the Center.
  • Food is provided at retreats but not at workshops. If you are registering for a workshop you may either bring a vegetarian lunch to eat at the Center or plan to go out to a nearby restaurant.
When You Arrive
  • Please plan to arrive on time. Allow an extra 10 or 20 minutes to check in, and settle into the Hall.
  • All retreat activities can be reached by a wheelchair accessible elevator or lift. Contact the office if you need the wheelchair accessible side entrance to be open on weekends.
  • Retreat participants are assigned “yogi jobs”. (Meditators are sometimes referred to as “yogis”. These are tasks related to food preparation and housekeeping. Yogi Jobs are an essential part of the retreat. They provide an opportunity to cultivate mindfulness in activity. They generally take about 30 minutes and are integrated into the structure of the day.
  • Shoes should be left in the shoe rack and coats in the first floor closet.
  • Please bring your valuables with you into the Meditation Hall.
  • Do not bring water bottles or food of any kind into the Meditation Hall.
  • Cell phones, pagers, beeper watches, etc should be turned off at all times in the Center.
  • After the retreat, please brush off your zabuton (large mat) and plump up your zafu (round cushion). Return any other items (i.e. benches, blankets) to their respective storage spaces so that you leave the hall as you found it.
